April 26-May 4
Hi friends,
I am sending today’s mail from the train and I just really love the idea that this mail is arriving to you, wherever you are, by some sort of internet-air-wave-train.
I’m happy my note made it to you! And I’m so glad you’re here!
This week’s OOH LA LA! list includes: flowers in sidewalk seams, cuting and gluing, and ice cream float.

Just as quickly as the flowers bloomed on the trees, they have now fallen to the ground, replaced by green leaves. Now the ground near the trees is filled with pink petals, like confetti, the grand finale of spring. I especially love when the petals fill the seams of the sidewalk, painting softness on the stone.

Something shifts in my spirit when I cut and glue small papers onto other paper. I was at the Noguchi Museum enjoying the meditative sculptures when I discovered a collage craft activity as part of an exhibit. I felt like I was in elementary art class again, ”loos’d of limits and imaginary lines” (as Whitman wrote), and I welcomed the invitation to play and dream. The act of making shapes with scissors and arranging everything on the page makes my mind calm, like soft water on a windless day.

What’s better than ice cream? Ice cream mixed with a little beverage (aka an ice cream float). Though root beer is the standard float beverage of choice, there are no rules about float etiquette that should stop you from trying ANY soda - or ANY beverage! - with ANY ice cream. My current top selection is a banana prebiotic soda and a dairy-free salted caramel ice cream. The sweetness of the banana mixed with the salty cold of the caramel ice cream makes a perfect snack that feels like summer, like the sound of baseball on the radio, and lying in the shade on a hot sunny day.

A few from readers…
Renee: I was vacationing in Philly last week when I was sucked into a bookstore by the gravitational pull that comes from my never ending TBR list. Upon entering, I was greeted at the door by a stout tabby cat, who welcomed guests with peace and nonchalance. I found out that his name was Dr. Pickles, and I loved him even more. As I was leaving, Dr. Pickles was perched lazily atop a pile of books by the register. A king overlooking his kingdom. Dare I say it was the best part of my trip.
Alexander: My birthday present to myself was crafting a fantastical centerpiece to celebrate spring and renewal. (I could have bought flowers around the corner in two minutes, but I took two weeks instead to invent some!)
