This week’s OOH LA LA! list includes: falling asleep while knowing someone else is awake, an infectious laugh, warm sun on skin.

There is a sweet tenderness in falling asleep knowing someone you love is awake in your home. This is part of why I love apartment living- just the notion that a neighbor may be providing their attention to the shared safety of the space makes me sleep more peacefully. Even better is the comfort of drifting to dreamland while cozied in bed in my brother and sister-in-law’s home knowing my brother is awake downstairs. This soft sense of safety feels like childhood innocence, like knowing there is a light on if I wake in the night, like trusting that the world is good and loving, so I can close my eyes and rest.

My almost-three-year-old niece has the most infectious laugh I’ve ever heard. In between trills and deep-belly roars, she giggles and sings, even laughing in between laughs with a breathy, vibrating open-mouthed exhale. When she laughs, she laughs loud and with abandon, throwing her head back and closing her eyes, a full embodied expression of joy. At the playground, her laugh is a siren call to all other toddlers who flock to see what great pleasure is being entertained. You simply cannot hear her laugh and not laugh, and I simply cannot think of a better sound. We should all aspire to laugh so long and loud and free.

Unexpectedly, temperatures in Indiana reached almost 80 degrees farenheit this week and I was delighted to be reacquainted with the feeling of warm sun on my skin. I tend toward feeling cold most of the time, so the sensation of warm air was a welcome gift, an invitation to walk slowly and take it all in. Oh, what a wonder it was to lay beneath blossoming trees on a hot spring day, soaking up the goodness of the ground on the green grass, the yellow dandelions scattered like bright stars in the sky.
