I bought my cat a special squeeze treat this week and that’s all she can think about since I brought them home. Now, anytime I open any package, she runs to me and readies herself to enjoy a tube of tuna jelly. She’s crazy for this stuff!
Sometimes I think about what her OOH LA LA! list would be and I know without a doubt a tuna squeeze treat is at the top.
My OOH LA LA! list for the week includes: twinkle lights, taking my hair down, roaming the grocery store aisles.
It’s December and the sun sets at 4:30 pm in Brooklyn. By 5:00 pm, it feels like it’s the middle of the night and by 5:30 pm, I am questioning the meaning of everything. To keep from spiraling, I take myself on a walk and when I see twinkle lights, I am steadied, if even for a moment. Some neighbors have outlined their windows with soft yellow string lights and this week I saw a car covered in red and green blinking ones, a spark of bright on an otherwise dark night. I am grateful.
My hair is now long enough to pull it back into a small ponytail. This is nice but not as nice as taking my hair down after having it up. Like massaging a knot from a tight muscle or taking a sip of a cold drink on a hot day, removing the hair tie is sweet relief.
What can you do when it’s dark and cold and you don’t feel like doing anything? My solution is roaming the grocery store aisles. Yes, I have to leave my apartment to get there, but then there is warmth inside and colorful produce and packages and people to see and right now, there is Christmas music playing! Even if I’m only buying an onion or carrots, there are no rules against sauntering through the frozen section while singing along to Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses. “Bah, humbug, no that’s too strong, cuz it’s my favorite holiday,” is the perfect backdrop to admiring the selection of Van Leeuwen ice cream and swaying the winter blues away.
Thanks for reading and for being here! It really means so much!

XOXO,

The grocery store is sort of like a produce gallery if you think of it. Also, after writing this week’s list I realize I probably need more vitamin D. Send your other winter survival strategies!
